Aldi & Majestic Wine

We were appointed by Northumberland Estates as lead designer from RIBA stages 2 to 6 to deliver a new Aldi store along with a Majestic Wine building on land just outside of the town centre in Alnwick, Northumberland. It was a challenge to gain planning approval as many of the local residents and small local businesses were against a supermarket being constructed in the area. A detailed submission was provided to the local authority which was approved in February 2014 at the local planning committee meeting after a recommendation for approval by the planning case officer.

The project has recently (May 2015) been handed over to the individual tenant’s for their fit-out’s. From planning approval to construction the project has only taken 15 months to design and construct.

The key challenge in this project was to ensure both buildings were designed to each individual tenants design brief and specification. This meant liaising with both Aldi and Majestic Wine representatives to ensure we delivered their standard product in relation to their strict detailed design documents.

The project was procured under a design and build contract and we were novated to the appointed main contractor, Robertson construction.
